5.2 Calculation and assessment foundations

Noise from sports facilities not subject to licensing is assessed according to the 18th Federal Immission Control Ordinance (Ordinance on the Prevention of Noise from Sports Facilities).

VDI 3770 gives characteristic noise emission values for numerous sports and leisure facilities. The characteristic noise emission values for further popular sport facilities (skate parks, beach volleyball, soccer grounds, inline hockey and streetball) are listed in a study by the Bavarian Regional Office for Environmental Protection (Landesanstalt für Umweltschutz/LfU Bayern, 2005 and 2006).

The size of sports and leisure facilities is usually not standardized and noise emissions can vary significantly, depending on the number of visitor/spectators for example. The characteristic values and clearances given in sections 5.2.2 and 5.2.5 can only be a first indication of how to assess potential noise conflicts. If the clearances are not kept, however, it is advisable to request a noise assessment.
